According to a Consumer Reports survey, 51% of GM customers who tried Onstar during the free trial period signed up for a subscription after the free period. Regarding utilization rates, here's what Consumer Reports had to say:
Overall, 22 percent of survey respondents adopting this technology said they had contacted the service for some type of emergency in the past 12 months; about the same number called for traffic conditions, weather information, or directions. More popular was OnStar's hands-free telephone--44 percent reported using the service to make business or personal calls at least once or twice.
Still, only 63 percent of subscribers used the service at all.
