Consumer Reports Looks at the Smart ForTwo

While we're on the subject of Consumer Reports. They have a First Take on the Smart ForTwo, a microcar that's not officially for sale in the United States.

The Smart returned 45 mpg in the Consumer Reports test, but the 40 hp. engine yielded a 0-60 time of 23.2 seconds. This is twice as long as the typical econobox sold today. It's more than twice as slow as the Toyota Prius, a hybrid that is much bigger and still gets about the same gas mileage as the Smart.

Consumer Report's Smart ForTwo cost almost $22,000. That's about the same amount that you'd pay for a used Toyota Prius (if you can find one); and it is not far from the price of a Honda Civic Hybrid.
