Word of the Day: Cringeworthy

Cringeworthy: That's a word that I encountered for the first time not long ago, then I just ran into it again last week. Cringeworthy is an adjective that is used to describe something that instinctively makes you cringe, or draw away. The wordsmith.org definition is "causing extreme embarrassment." The word has British origins, with Cuthbert Cringeworthy debuting in a British comic strip, the Bash Street Kids, in 1971. The word seems to have crossed into international english usage in the very recent past, spreading like wildfire on the web. Google reports 184,000 hits on the word "cringeworthy". To show you how fast the word has spread, over 122,000 of the hits also hit with "2006".
